José Johnson is a Harrisburg, PA based free-lance musician. José has been performing, writing and arranging music professionally since the age of 16. His eclectic taste in music has allowed him to move between such genres as jazz, swing, funk, R&B, pop, Latin and most recently, electronic music. Over the years he has established himself as a dynamic trumpet player, a versatile vocalist and a masterful horn arranger. His work with local bands such as The Impact Band, The Maxwell Project, Nate Myers & The Aces, Big Tubba Mista, The Greatest Funeral Ever, Life On Mercury and Groove Jones has made him a mainstay of the Harrisburg, PA music scene.
José is the co-founder and leader of Gumbo Junk, a Central Pennsylvania based New Orleans Style Brass Band.
José attended the Ohio State University School of Music majoring in Music Education and Jazz Studies Composition. Over the years José has studied with a number of outstanding teachers including, Ray Eubanks, Jerome Callet, Wes Orr, Vaughn Nark, Roger Ingram, John Brye, "Pops" McLaughlin and Jim Manley.
José exclusively plays Warburton trumpets, flugelhorns and mouthpieces.
